Modupe's Ghanaian lace-New York, NY

When Modupe's beautiful and fashionable mother arrived from Ghana to the United States in the 1960s, she was wearing one of her favorite clothing items: a pink lace blouse with wide, pleated, double-layered sleeves. Could we design and make double bangle bracelets from the lace, Modupe wanted to know? Her idea was to capture the spirit of this blouse and the memory of her mother arriving in her new country. To honor Modupe's parents, we inscribed her mother's birth date on the inside of one of the bracelets and her father's on the other.

Modupe also brought us a Ghanaian pink lace wrap that she and her sisters wore as children (see photo on previous page). We designed two chandelier earrings from this lace for Modupe, and silver rings for her and her sisters. With each ring, came a tag with a snippet of the original lace. The tag reads: Sankofa - may we never forget where we came from.
